Seats Available?: Sold Out Required Supplies: - A 10” pre-prepared and already basted quilt sandwich - At least three different good quality 40 or 50 weight COTTON sewing threads in a single colour way, coordinating with your chosen to fabric. You’ll need a light, medium, and a dark thread. One or more of these could be variegated. - One packet of fresh 80/12 universal needles.
Optional Supplies: - Small Sewing scissors or snips if you can travel with them. - A wider variety than three thread colours. Not necessary but fun to play. - At least one spare bobbin for YOUR at HOME machine. To wind off any unused bobbin thread you want to keep.
Prep Requirements: Bring your 10" quilt sandwich of top, backing & batting ALREADY basted together. It can be pinned, glue basted or tacked but importantly, the backing and batting needs to be at least 1.5 inches bigger than the top all the way around (eg 13"). Any batting will do- except very puffy 100% polyester.
Use a solid, or a fabric that reads very plain like a grunge or an ombre for your top. Your top could be VERY minimally pieced like the example photographs but this is not necessary to learn the techniques.
The backing could be anything, plain or patterned but plain backings will show up your texture if you’d like to see it on the back as well as the front.
Texture lovers unite! In this workshop, Sharon introduces a meditative machine quilting technique that brings the calming benefits of slow stitching to the sewing machine. Students will create a small quilted block with stitching lines placed closer than traditional matchstick quilting—often just a needle-width apart.
As lines of thread build up, students will explore how layering creates rich, unique textures. While not thread painting in the traditional art quilt sense, this approach uses repetition and line to focus the senses and transform fabric surfaces. Sharon will guide students through selecting the right combinations of needle, thread, and batting to enhance texture, and demonstrate which presser feet are most effective for precise stitching.
Students will also experiment with subtle color shifts by layering solid and variegated threads, discovering how meditative stitching can lead to both visual depth and a deeply relaxing creative experience.
