Required Supplies: - 2 yards of an interesting* striped fabric - A couple of square rulers to suit the scale of your stripe (anywhere from 4½"" to 12½""). Choose based on your luggage space — if you can only bring one, pick the size you’ll use most (Lorena finds 5"–8" ideal). - Small scissors - shared scissors will be provided but you may wish to have your own to maximize class time and ease of cutting - 2B pencil or erasable fabric marker - Fabric glue stick - Fine cotton thread to match your fabric - 80/12 sharp sewing machine needle
Optional Supplies: - small rotary cutter and mat - washi or masking tape to mark up ruler
Prep Requirements: What makes a stripe interesting? Ombre fabrics, colour gradations, varied stripe widths, and multi-coloured designs all work beautifully for this technique. Wide two-colour stripes can also be very effective. Two colour stripes should be at least 1" wide.
Note: This is a technique-based class. The amount of fabric you’ll need depends on the repeat of your stripe, the size of your chosen square ruler, and the desired finished size of your quilt. Because fussy cutting can be unpredictable, it’s tricky to estimate exact yardage. You may find that 1 yard is enough for a small quilt.
Discover the bold possibilities of stripes in this exciting workshop focused on fussy cutting for maximum visual impact. In Dynamic Hypnotic, students will learn how to take striped fabrics beyond borders and bindings, using them as the hero of their quilt designs! Lorena will guide students through her process of selecting, auditioning, and fussy cutting striped fabrics to create hypnotic, dynamic quilt blocks with rhythm and movement. This workshop will explore how symmetry, repetition and rotation can transform simple stripes into bold geometric illusions - no special rulers required.
Ideal for confident beginners and experienced quilters alike, the session builds skills in working with directional prints, enhancing contrast, and creating visual flow. Students will leave with striking sample blocks and fresh inspiration for using stripes in future projects.
Bring your curiosity and a sense of play. You’ll never look at stripes the same way again!
